"Rewild Florida" solo exhibition Sept. 28-Dec. 31, 2024 at Flamingo Gardens
Flamingo Gardens presents: Rewild Florida – The Art of Stephanie McMillan, an exhibit of drawings of South Florida plants and wildlife by Fort Lauderdale artist Stephanie McMillan. Her art portrays iconic species such as the Florida panther, manatee, and alligator, as well as less widely appreciated species like the spiny orb weaver, larraflower, and the ring-neck snake. For McMillan, creating art has become a spiritual practice that opens possibilities for connecting with plants, wildlife, and the human community. The underlying message of this collection is: “Let’s get to know the wild beings around us and participate in the web of...

As part of a group exhibition of work by several Artists-in-Residents at the New River Inn museum at History Fort Lauderdale, Stephanie McMillan will present approximately 30 new drawings and paintings created from emotions of affection and respect for local plants and wildlife, and from a desire to imagine ways of improving relationships within the web of life. These figurative artworks are loosely rendered with combinations of various mediums on paper and cardboard, and sometimes include text. Their lighthearted and accessible visual style (contrasting with their seriousness of intent), is the mature expression of McMillan’s life in Fort Lauderdale, where...

They should all be done by fall/winter.
Some ways to be a friend to local plants & wildlife (an evolving list)
Hello. This list is a current reflection of my own evolving process of attempting to relate better within the web of life. My personal understanding and efforts are shaped by my history as a descendant of European settlers on Turtle Island, raised within capitalism/imperialism which systematically conquers, genocides, exploits, commodifies, and forcibly disconnects its subjects from land. Though each person's ideas are inevitably conditioned by our individual placement within the overarching global economic process, the process itself is social, collective and ever-unfolding, and we each have some agency within the role we play. So I share this list in...
